STEP 1. Assess the Severity

STEP 2. Rinse the Eye

Rinse gently with water if caused by foreign object, chemical, or irritant. Don't rinse if object is embedded or chemical exposure occurred; seek professional help.

STEP 3. Remove Contact Lenses

(if possible)

STEP 5. Avoid Rubbing the Eyes

Don't rub the affected eye, especially if something's lodged in it; it can worsen the condition.

STEP 6. Arrange SAFE transportation

Gather medical history, insurance info, and medication list for the appointment. If unable to drive safely, arrange alternative transportation to the office.
