Cataract Eye Exams
In Palm Beach, FL

Cataracts are one of the most common eye conditions, especially as people get older. A cataract happens when the normally clear lens inside the eye becomes cloudy, making vision look blurry, dim, yellowed, or less sharp.

For many people, cataracts develop slowly. At first, a small change in glasses may help. Over time, cataracts can begin to affect night driving, reading, watching TV, recognizing faces, or enjoying daily activities.

What Are Cataracts?

Cataracts occur when the natural lens inside the eye becomes cloudy. The lens helps focus light so you can see clearly. When it becomes cloudy, light does not pass through as easily, and vision can become blurry, hazy, dim, or glare-sensitive.

Cataracts can happen to anyone, but some people have a higher risk. Age is the most common factor, but lifestyle, health conditions, medications, and sun exposure can also play a role.

Common cataract symptoms may include: Blurry vision, cloudy or hazy vision, glare from headlights, lamps, or sunlight, halos around lights, and trouble seeing at night.

Ways to Reduce Your Risk of Getting Cataracts

  • Wear sunglasses with UV protection
Choose sunglasses that block 100% UVA and UVB rays or say UV400. This is especially important in sunny areas like Palm Beach because long-term sunlight exposure is a cataract risk factor.

  • Wear a brimmed hat outdoors
A hat adds another layer of protection from direct sunlight and UV exposure, especially during long periods outside.

  • Quit smoking
Smoking increases cataract risk and is one of the most important lifestyle factors to address for eye health.

  • Manage diabetes and blood sugar
People with diabetes are more likely to develop cataracts and may develop them at a younger age. Keeping blood sugar controlled can help reduce eye-related complications.

  • Eat a diet rich in fruits and vegetables
Foods with antioxidants may support long-term eye health. Good options include oranges, strawberries, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, spinach, kale, carrots, and sweet potatoes.

  • Limit excessive alcohol use
Heavy alcohol use may increase cataract risk, so moderation is best for both eye health and overall health.

  • Keep up with regular comprehensive eye exams
Cataracts often develop slowly. Routine eye exams help monitor changes early and determine whether glasses, lifestyle adjustments, or a cataract surgery referral may be needed.
